Look Back, Even Though That’s Not Where We’re Going.

L

“Don’t look back – you’re not going that way.”

It made sense to me when I first read this famous quote, but current events made me change my mind.

(S)he who doesn’t look at the past, is bound to repeat it.

The present is a culmination of all that has happened in the past, therefore, to fully understand the present we’ll need to fully understand the past. Only if you fully understand the present, you can start planning for a better future.

On a micro level, this means as an individual you’ll need to face the past – no matter how uncomfortable – in order to make peace with it and use it to grow as a person.

On a macro level, this means as a society we’ll need to study history extensively, uncovering the truth and the whole truth, as it teaches us how not to repeat the horrors of the past.

Only by fully understanding the past, can we make a change for a better future.
